A game of thrones first book5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister-the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse-unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon his daughters Sansa and Arya and his bastard son, Jon Snow. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. ![]()

The sandman vol 6 fables and reflections5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In Gaiman’s mythology, Orpheus is the son, not of Apollo, but of Morpheus, and Dream’s entire family, who attends Orpheus’ wedding, are caught up in the tragic events surrounding the death of his wife Eurydice. ![]() ![]() The second most powerful story in Fables and Reflections is the life of the poet and musician Orpheus. Gaiman wrote it during Operation Desert Storm, and, although the tale is not only filled with magic but also inked in a marvel of colors suited to the city of the Arabian Nights, it is touched with melancholy and loss rooted in the devastation of war in Iraq. The best of these four-in fact, the best of the entire collection-is the story of the Caliph of Baghdad and the bargain he makes with the Lord of Dreams. Just, Caliph Harun al-Rashid, and San Francisco native Joshua Norton (self-proclaimed Emperor of America)-all of whom led lives profoundly affected by dreams. Still, there are a couple of themes present here: 1) the fate of empires and emperors, and 2) the ways in which narrative-in dream and song-can sustain hope and foster illusion.įour of the stories feature historical rulers-Emperor Caesar Augustus, revolutionary leaders Robespierre and St. The sixth collection-as its title suggests-is a somewhat random grab-bag of tales, only tenuously connected with the Sandman story. ![]()

The unknown by jw lynne5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() I finished reading this book in awe." - Carly, Goodreads "ONE EXCITING ADVENTURE!!!. one of my favourite genres, but I haven't seen it written so well in a very long time. The chosen beautiful5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It is clear from page one that The Chosen and the Beautiful is all about lush prose. Nghi Vo already made her mark with the first two Singing Hills Cycle novellas, but The Chosen and the Beautiful is an exceptional debut novel from an exceptional writer, and I hope it is only the first of what will be many. I was happy to discover that although Nghi Vo doesn’t quite manage to capture the lightning-in-a-bottle storytelling that facilitated Madeline Miller’s rise to fame, The Chosen and the Beautiful is a refreshing and successful complement to The Great Gatsby that I can’t wait to recommend for fans of the original book and newcomers to the story. So it was with trepidation as well as anticipation that I began Nghi Vo’s The Chosen and the Beautiful, which reframes one of my all-time favorite novels, The Great Gatsby, from the perspective of a Vietnamese Jordan Baker in a world where one can attend a party at Gatsby’s and encounter actual magic. Every once in a while someone like John Gardner comes along with Grendel or Madeline Miller with The Song of Achilles, but in my experience books like these fail more often than they succeed. Retelling and riffing on classic texts is, at best, playing with fire. ![]() I received an ARC of The Chosen and the Beautiful from Macmillan-Tor/Forge in exchange for an honest review. ![]()

Martin lings biography5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() Lewis, the most influential figure in his education. Lings’ clarity and rigour came from his incessant studies on Shakespeare, whose works he got to know by way of C.S. And while Schuon is remembered for a perennialist mysticism that bordered syncretism, the form of Sufism Lings brought to the West was much less cryptic. While Schuon expressed himself through his tireless German complexity, Lings described the Prophet with turgid language. As every true disciple is destined to do, Martin ended up surpassing him. He was so devoted to Frithjof Schuon, the closest among his teachers, that he ended up resembling him in many ways – same gaze, same gait. Like water can change its form, he could be a librarian, a Sufi or a professor. Martin Lings was just as at ease in his unbuttoned, exquisitely tailored, very British corduroy jacket at his home in Westerham, Kent, as he was throwing a bisht, the traditional Arab cloak woven out of camel’s hair and goat wool, over his shoulder in the streets of Cairo. The second installment of the series curated by Pietrangelo Buttafuoco tells the story of Martin Lings ![]() ![]() Lives in history of the Mediterranean: Martin Lings ![]()
