B.P.R.D., Vol. 6 by Mike Mignola5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles ( B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. While the first story line ( Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics. ![]() By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered. Mike Mignola was born Septemin Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. ![]()

Drama in the Desert by Holly Kreuter5/29/2023 ![]() Highly Recommended: "A fabulous collection of images revealing of a very special kind of 'artistic expression' at the turn of every page." In one word, as it regards photo books in general, and the photo books about Burning Man, Drama in the Desert is without peer. Also, for those who have attended, and wanted to have something, anything, to try and help communicate what it is like, this is it. If you HAVE been there, this book may bring both tears to your eyes (from rememberances that affect you so deeply) and laughter to your lips. If you have heard about Burning Man, have read about it, seen a few photo's and have wondered what it is like, and have not yet attended, this book will bring you closer than any other. Next, when you have settled enough, after paging through to see these captured moments of manifested thoughts, the text goes deeper, touching the heart. ![]() And the subject(s) of the images look surreal, hyper-real, and dream-like, pulling you into the pages, so that even if just for a moment, your imagination (or memory, if you have been there) allows you to BE there. ![]() Next, the attention is drawn into the book, transporting you to this place, this city, which exists for only 7 days once a year. The first aspect of it that grabs the eye is the quality of the printing and construction. ![]() From my initial handling of this work, it was obvious that this was no ordinary photo book. ![]()

When not occupied with wedding activities, Marjorie enjoys spending time with elderly guests at the resort. Say cheese and die by rl stine5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() At least half of them are silly, the characters psyching themselves and each other out, but as a strategy for getting reluctant readers to keep reading, it’s extremely effective. The pacing is spot-on, and Stine is at the top of his game with cliffhangers at the end of almost every chapter. Even as an adult, this book holds up well. Really, I came by it naturally.) It’s also probably my second-favorite Goosebumps book of all time, after One Day at Horrorland because Ray Bradbury hit me early with the spooky carnivals. ![]() (I was a weird kid, and he’s a horror lover himself. Thoughts: This was one of my favorite Goosebumps books when I was growing up, prompting a number of playground reenactments with the book’s major villain (aka my dad) chasing me into the jungle gym. Can the camera tell the future, or is it causing terrible things to happen? Could it be that the camera is cursed? Trigger warnings: death, car accidents, injury, stalking, bullying, threats. The pictures keep coming out wrong, showing the subjects in terrible accidents that Greg is horrified to realize soon come true. Does the camera show the future? Or does it actually cause bad things to happen?”Ībout: When Greg and his friends investigate an abandoned and supposedly haunted house in his neighborhood, he finds a spooky old camera that takes strange pictures. “What was the truth about the camera? he wondered. ![]()

Raising Hell by Jon Wiederhorn5/28/2023 ![]() Even before they joined bands, the urge for metalheads to rebel and a seemingly contradictory need to belong was ingrained in their DNA. For many, vice has been virtue, and the opportunity to record albums and tour has been an invitation to push boundaries and open a Pandora ’s Box of wild experiences. The metal genre has always been populated by colorful individuals who have thwarted convention and lived by their own rules. ![]() ![]() The book contains the crazy, funny and sometimes horrifying anecdotes musicians have told about a lifestyle both invigorating and at times self-destructive. In his song “You Can’t Stop Rock and Roll” Ozzy Osbourne sings, “Rock and roll is my religion and my law.” And that’s why Raising Hell is a must-have for anyone who wants to read about the iconoclastic culture of headbangers and the wild lives they lead. ![]() From the author of the celebrated classic Louder Than Hell comes an oral history of the badass Heavy Metal lifestyle―the debauchery, demolition, and headbanging dedication―featuring metalhead musicians from Black Sabbath and Judas Priest to Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot to Disturbed, Megadeth, Throwdown and more. ![]()

The chronicles of prydain5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() We often talk about the importance of novels in literary terms, but this demonstrates the importance of novels in terms of much wider culture. This comfortable relationship with the fantasy Middle Ages has given us many styles of games (from RPG to board to computer) and it helps bind some groups of re-enactors together in their re-enactment choices. I often think of this as ‘Disneyfication’ as a code for one kind of play, and because it’s the most obvious kind of play that comes from Alexander’s series. In this case it’s from a respected and loved set of stories that are used to give a feeling of the Middle Ages (even if there is not much or nothing of the actual Middle Ages in them) and to create a world that is great to read about and even to play in. ![]() Inspiration and creation come from somewhere and lead somewhere else. It always has a link (often many links) to what the writers know or think they knew about history and about how worlds operate.Īlexander’s work demonstrates very clearly how this bridge works for writers and for readers. ![]() That fantasy is never completely invented. It’s the bridge by which history links to fantasy. For me, then, the Disney version of Alexander’s creation that is inspired by (but doesn’t follow) an actual medieval text sums up many peoples’ preferred Middle Ages. I wonder, sometimes, if this isn’t the Middle Ages most people prefer – one of creative invention and adventure and magic rather than one of connection to our actual past. ![]()

Mountain laurel by jude deveraux5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() I cut up the book covers into smaller pieces subtracting the text, put all these smaller images in one folder on my computer, and I input this content into Photoshop's Photomerge algorithm. I used content from 100+ different books chopped up as input for this project. Each plate also features a Popular Highlight from a romance novel on Kindle. I print these landscapes on porcelain commemorative plates. ![]() ![]() Because the covers are so similar, the algorithm often finds areas that it believes should overlap. After scanning all of the covers, I apply Photoshop's Photomerge feature (originally intended to stitch together photos to make panoramas) to the images to produce dreamy, hybrid landscapes. For this ongoing series of work, I combine popular algorithms with traditional romance novels. ![]() |
