Barbara ehrenreich walmart5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() As Ehrenreich worked restaurant, retail, and house cleaning jobs across the United States she found coworkers sleeping in cars, depending on relatives, forgoing medical care, and not getting enough to eat, and she herself could barely subsist. It’s true that a central finding of Nickel and Dimed was that it’s really difficult to survive on the minimum wage. The Times obit says Ehrenreich “found it nearly impossible to subsist on an average of $7 an hour” and says she concluded that “every job takes skill and intelligence… and should be paid accordingly.” The Guardian says the book “helped spread awareness of an economy in which it was necessary to work two or three jobs to survive, and acted as a catalyst of the minimum wage movement.” The New York Times review of the book, which deemed Ehrenreich “our premier reporter of the underside of capitalism,” said the takeaway of the book was that for “a worker holding two jobs, wages are too low, housing costs too high for minimally decent survival.” Indeed, in obituaries for Ehrenreich, the point of the book is summarized as: working class jobs do not pay enough to cover a minimally decent standard of living. ![]() ![]() Barbara Ehrenreich will probably always be best known for Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, a bestseller that recounted her time spent working low-wage jobs across America. ![]()

The Eye of the Beholder by Sarah Matts5/27/2023 ![]() I didn't notice that she is played by two actors. We don't have to know that the girl is dead to think of the image of her as a ghost. Also the making the lost daughter's ghost more solid is an interesting effect. The book's Eye is an old-fashioned gumshoe who simply looks though bedroom windows and the like. ![]() The major improvement over the book is the addition of the hi-tech snooping equipment. Actually Behm has 13 IMDB credits, and most of them are difficult to find. I can't think of any parallels with Marc Behm's Beatles film 'Help!'(1965). Like Marc Behm's script for 'Charade'(1963) it is about a spook who is looking after a young woman who doesn't really know what is going on. Like the director, Stephan Elliott's major film, 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert', 'Eye of the Beholder' is a road movie about eccentrics, one of whom is into wigs and changing her appearance. I would like to see the original film version, 'Mortelle randonnée'(1983) (it has a really good soundtrack album by Carla Bley), but so far have not found a video-rental shop that has a copy. ![]() I watched the film twice, read Marc Behm's book and then watched it again. Those naysayers should actually read the posted comments. Despite over 300 comments, some people are still posting saying that it was beyond them and what do the rest of us see in it. ![]()

Sons and lovers5/27/2023 ![]() FR Leavis did, when he enrolled Lawrence in the "great tradition" of the English novel, comprising Jane Austen, George Eliot, Henry James and Joseph Conrad. A century of readers have reached for the same adjective. "It is quite a great novel" "I remember you telling me, at the beginning, it would be great. And the word he used to Garnett recurred, in letters to friends. ![]() But he was proud when a finished copy reached him in Italy. He was already on to the next thing (a draft of what would become The Rainbow), and had "scarcely the patience" to correct the proofs. Beneath these worries lay a deeper worry, about the text itself: "I am a great admirer of my own stuff while it's new, but after a while I'm not so gone on it," he admitted. He worried about the dust jacket, and arranged for a friend, Ernest Collings, to design one (like the foreword, it wasn't used). ![]() He worried whether it might benefit from a foreword (and belatedly posted one to Garnett). ![]() ![]() He worried about the title (he had originally called the book "Paul Morel "). "Read my novel – it's a great novel." Lawrence's immodesty is forgivable: the book had been through four drafts, and after two years of struggle he was hugely relieved to have it finished. 'I tell you I've written a great book," DH Lawrence informed his publisher Edward Garnett, after sending him the manuscript of Sons and Lovers in November 1912. ![]()

As Evil Does by John Tigges5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was transported into a world of culture very different from my own, to a place where I knew no one and it took me a long time to find people to whom I could relate.ĭuring those cold lonely days, I turned to books as a way to check out and fly for a while - books have never turned their backs on me in any respect. She was leaving Colorado to head home, so I decided to move with her. A quick personal reminisce: in the early 1990s, I got tangled up with a girl who was from northeastern Iowa. They vary in quality, but I have never put one down unfinished. John Tigges novels have been a guilty pleasure of mine since the 1980s. All of his novels were firmly in the realm of supernatural pulp horror. The majority of his novels dealt with Satanism, possession, and devil worshipers plotting nefarious deeds. He wrote 16 occult horror novels for Leisure Books between 19, making him one of the primary producers of horror fiction for that company during the horror boom years. John Tigges (– October 29, 2008) was an American author of non-fiction and horror. ![]()

Newman the idea of a university5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() For this reason, Martin Svaglic characterized Idea as “deliberative rhetoric” In these discourses, Newman was not offering a precontemplated, already-matured theory of liberal education. essays like Grammar of Assent or Development of Christian Doctrine), Idea began as disparate speeches to various audiences over months. However, in the discourses published under the title The Idea of the University, Newman’s rhetorical tactics and goals may easily go unnoticed. ![]() John Henry Newman’s rhetorical acumen is evident throughout his works. “From Cicero he had learned the art of pommeling broadly… He urgently needed a thesis to attack or defend, some authority as the goal of his eloquence… then he had a start”. To appreciate Newman’s Idea of a University, it is necessary to discuss his rhetorical maneuvers and intentions.įrancis Newman highlighted the rhetorical ability of his cardinal brother. ![]()
